JOAN Rivers has sparked outrage after making a series of cruel jibes about Adele’s weight on TV.

The sharp-tongued comedienne provoked boos from the audience when she laid into the singer’s size on David Letterman’s US chat show last night.

After announcing that she’d met the Oscar-winning pop star, Rivers puffed out her cheeks and pushed her arms away from her body as she asked David: “Has she been on the show?”

Despite the chorus of disapproval that greeted her physical enactment of a chubby person, the controversial 79-year-old continued to poke fun at Adele’s figure.

She joked: “What is her song? Rolling In The Deep? She should add Fried Chicken.”

Rivers went on to mock Adele’s anxiety before her Oscars performance of her James Bond song Skyfall, revealing the singer was worried about her throat and complained that she couldn’t swallow.

 The stand-up veteran quipped: “I said, ‘Oh yeah, you can swallow,” as she again held out her arms in a gesture of portliness.

Her Adele attack comes days after she caused disgust among the Jewish community for making a sick Holocaust joke about model Heidi Klum.

Speaking on E! show Fashion Police on Monday, she said: “The last time a German looked this hot was when they were pushing Jews into the ovens.”

Jewish Rivers is now being called upon to apologise for her “vulgar and hideous” comments by the Anti-Defamation League.

The US civil rights body said in a statement: “It is vulgar and offensive for anybody to use the death of six million Jews and millions of others in the Holocaust to make a joke, but this is especially true for someone who is Jewish and who proudly and publicly wears her Jewishness on her sleeve.”


Fashion Police chiefs have yet to issue a statement on Rivers’ offensive joke.

Adele is no stranger to being targeted over her weight.

At the Academy Awards on Sunday, host Seth MacFarlane took a pop at her size and fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld labelled her “too fat” in an interview last year.

He said: “The thing at the moment is Adele — she is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice.”

Adele subsequently hit back, saying: “I've never wanted to look like models on the cover of magazines.

 “I represent the majority of women and I'm very proud of that.”
